---------------------------
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
---------------------------

1. Start the Newton Connection Kit or any other third party application which supports package downloading.
2. Click on the Install Package button.
3. Select the ButtonBar file from the Newt Tools Demo folder. The ButtonBar file is located in the "Install to Internal if Possible" folder.
4. Tap the Extras Drawer on your Newton to open it and then tap the Card icon.
5. Make sure "Store new items on card" is NOT checked. Tap the Close button.

NOTE: You will be installing the ButtonBar to the internal memory. If you have more than one Card, you can avoid the problem of having your Newton repeatedly ask you to re-insert your PCMCIA Card when you try to remove it by installing the ButtonBar to the internal memory. If you do not have enough free space to install the ButtonBar to the internal memory, remember to move the ButtonBar to the internal memory before removing your Card.

6. Tap the Connection icon. Tap the type of connection you are using and then tap the Connect button.
7. When the package is finished, click on the Install Package button again on your Macintosh.
8. From your Macintosh package downloading program, select the Newt Tools file from the folder titled "Install On Card."

NOTE: If you do not have a PCMCIA Card, you will want to skip steps 9 and 10.

9. Tap the Extras Drawer on your Newton to open it and then tap the Card icon.
10. Make sure "Store new items on card" IS checked. Tap the Close button.
11. From the Extras Drawer, Tap the Connection icon. Tap the type of connection you are using and then tap the Connect button.
12. Repeat steps 7 through 11 for the remaining Newt Tools packages.

NOTE: Install the Scroll.pkg package to the Internal memory if you have a PCMCIA Card (PC Card).

--------------------------
IMPORTANT STORAGE ISSUES
--------------------------
As a Newton rule, you should keep 10-20% of your storage space free to prevent "out of space" messages when performing moving, duplicating, archiving, etc. The PackTool will attempt to warn you prior to performing the procedure when you do no not have enough space free to complete the process.

AVOID FILLING YOUR INTERNAL AND CARD STORES TO THEIR CAPACITIES.

----------------------
LOST MEMORY RECOVERY
----------------------
Should you ever encounter an application which continues to occupy memory when deleted or was accidentally deleted because of a Newton System Error, transfer cancellation, the Archived Packages Soup was deleted, or for any other reason, follow these steps to regain the lost memory:

1. Restart Newton
2. Launch PackTool
3. Select all packages and tap the Action (Envelope) Button.
4. Tap Restore Packages
5. Close PackTool
6. Perform a Newton Connection Kit Synchronize (Consult your Newton Connection Kit user manual)
7. Perform a Newton Connection Kit Restore (Consult your Newton Connection Kit user manual)

------------------
KNOWN CONFLICTS
------------------
-Action Names & Agenda (Package Error received when being hidden or archived. There is little benefit in hiding or archiving this application.)
-Pairs (Avoid hiding or archiving.)
-Hangman (Avoid hiding or archiving.)
-PWDial (Avoid hiding or archiving.)
-Xmaster (Avoid hiding or archiving.)
-ScrollingDoPopup (Not incompatible, just redundant to have Scroll Menus installed too. Avoid hiding and archiving.)
-Newton Book Maker books (Hidden Newton Books will not appear in the Hidden Apps listing or in the Package button list of the ButtonBar. You must restore Newton Books using the PackTool before opening them.)

IMPORTANT: Some applications expect the Extras Drawer to be open and will make a call to close it upon launch. If you encounter an error launching a program, try opening the Newton Extras Drawer before launching the program.

IMPORTANT: Should you receive a Package Error dialog when hiding or archiving a specific package, restore the package using PackTool and avoid hiding or archiving the package in the future.

--------------------------
HIDING AND ARCHIVING TIPS
--------------------------
Please read the Newt Tools User Manual section titled "About Hiding and Archiving" for an explanation of the terms and functions BEFORE performing hiding and archiving packages.

NOTE: Whenever possible, use Fast Hide Package(s) instead of archiving. Archiving packages is a slow procedure.

IMPORTANT: Applications which place icons in other applications, such as the Notepad, Dates, Names, etc. or applications which do not have icons appearing in the Extras Drawer have little benefit in being hidden or archived unless the application is no longer being used. You may receive a Package Error message when hiding or archiving these programs. Restore the application using the PackTool and avoid hiding or archiving the application.

IMPORTANT: Avoid hiding or archiving applications which need to be open at all times.

---------------------------------------
-8007 ERROR WHEN CLOSING APPLICATIONS
---------------------------------------
Should you encounter an -8007 error message when tapping any of the Tools' or other application's Close Button, you probably tapped the Close Button while procedures were still being performed. The error is not fatal. Tap the error message Close Button and continue.

WHEN ENTRY DISPLAY LIST OR THE 'SORT ENTRIES BY' MENU
IN SOUPEDIT CONTAINS BLANK LINE(S)
----------------------------------------------------
If you experience blank lines in the Entry display list or in the "Sort Entries By" menu, the list or menu is legitimate. The following example explains: When you create a new Names entry and you only enter a Company name without entering a person's last name and the "List by" menu in the Names application is set to list by "Last Name", there is no last name by which to sort. Therefore, the entry in SoupEdit appears blank. If you wish to correct the display, go into the Names application and modify the "List by" menu for the specific names.

-----------------------------------------------------
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE BUTTONBAR
-----------------------------------------------------
Q. Why does selecting a font style or size modify the entire note or paragraph?
A. The font menu works this way because it is helpful to avoid having to select and scroll text to modify the entire note. If you wish to modify a specific selection, select the text you wish to modify, and tap the Modify Selection command at the top of the font menu.

Q. Why does the Default Store Button take two clicks to switch?
A. This occasionally happens because the ButtonBar was not aware of the card being inserted or removed.

Q. Why does selecting a Tool from the Tools Button in the ButtonBar sometimes fail to launch the Tool?
A. One of the Tools is currently open. When using any of the Tools and you have another application (ex. Names) open and you tap a Tool name from the Tools Button in the ButtonBar and nothing happens, close the foreground application(s) until you reach the currently open Tool and then select a different Tool.
Also, Tapping the Notepad Button to close the Notepad and then selecting a Tool from the Tools Button in the ButtonBar will not launch the selected Tool. Locate the currently running Tool application to launch Tools from the ButtonBar.

---------------------------------------------------
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE PACKTOOL
---------------------------------------------------
Q. How can I force the PackTool display to update the list after I have installed additional applications?
A. Tap the Overview Button (appearing between the Up and Down arrows at the bottom of the screen) and the PackTool display will be updated.

Q. Why does a 20K package residing on Internal memory not remove 20K from the Card space free display when moved to the Card?
A. Packages listed in the PackTool are displayed at the uncompressed size. The actual space used on the storage location will be different.
EXAMPLE: the Card store has 35K free and a package which is listed as 20K in size is moved to the Card. After moving, the space free will display 25K free. The application only occupies 15K of card storage space because it is compressed when it resides on the Card.

Q. Why can't I get the Fast Hide Packages menu command to display from the Action (envelope) Button?
A. A package is selected in the list which is already hidden or archived. De-select the hidden or archived application from the selection list by tapping on the hidden or archived package and then tap the Action Button.

Q. Why is there an icon which says that there is "No Icon" for the MemTool, SoupTool, SoupEdit and other packages?
A. These are applications which do not appear in the Newton Extras Drawer. Therefore, there is no icon to display.

---------------------------------------------------
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE MEMTOOL
---------------------------------------------------
Q. Why does a soup listed in the "Orphaned Soups" section say that the parent application cannot be found when the application is still installed?
A. The MemTool cannot be aware of all applications which create soups with incorrect parent names. If you know the soup is relevant to an existing application, make sure the Fix? checkbox for the item is un-checked before tapping the Fix Problems Button. Before fixing problems, it is a good habit to perform a MemTool diagnostic check after you have completed a Newton Connection Kit backup.

Q. How do you know which problems should be fixed and which should be left alone?
A. Tap the ? Question Button at the end of each item in the list for an explanation. It is a good habit to perform a MemTool check after performing a backup using Newton Connection Kit. If you made a mistake and deleted something vital, you can restore from your backup.

---------------------------------------------------
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE SOUPTOOL
---------------------------------------------------
Q. Why are there two soups with the same name?
A. Newton merges the soups in internal memory with a card. A soup exists on each storage location. You can move the entries in the soup from one store to the other.

Q. How do I move all of my Names, Dates, or To Do items to the same store?
A. To move all of the names in your internal memory to the card, tap the Names soup on the Internal store (the one with the Newton icon). Tap the Action (envelope) Button at the bottom of the screen and select the "Move All Entries To..." command. Use the same procedure when moving any soup information to a different storage location.

Q. Why can't I get the Move All Entries To... menu command to display from the Action (envelope) Button?
A. More than one soup is selected in the list. To move entries, only one soup can be selected. To de-select the additional soups, scroll through the list of soups and de-select the soup(s) from the selection list by tapping on the soup name and then tap the Action Button.

-----------------------------------------------
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING SOUPEDIT
-----------------------------------------------
Q. Why do I experience a restart every time I try to view the Names soup?
A. You probably have the Depth menu set to a high (8) number. Try setting it to a lower number. The Names soup is generally a large soup and you are using too much memory when viewing this soup at this depth level.

Q. Why can't I change the _uniqueID slot?
A. Modification of this slot is not allowed.

Q. Why does erasing the number in a slot replace it with a zero?
A. For your protection, erasing the number in a slot does not delete it.

---------------------------------------------------
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE NOTEPAD
---------------------------------------------------
Q. Why is there a blank screen and the Notepad is gone when I sometimes quit an application?
A. If you close an application and return to a blank screen, the Notepad is closed. To re-open the Notepad, tap the Notepad Button (the document icon) on the ButtonBar. You can save heap memory space when then Notepad is closed.
